Water Design for Works Approvals

Overview

A Part IV approval settles whether a proposal may be implemented and on what conditions. A Part V works approval asks for the thing itself — sized, set and dimensioned, inside a footprint that has usually already been cleared. This is the surface water engineering that has to exist by then.

Capabilities

  • Storage and pond sizing carried through to a real footprint — operating volume, design storm inflow, evaporation and freeboard resolved together, then stated as the plan area the structure needs at top water level rather than left as a volume in a water balance
  • Spillway and overflow design — design event, invert setting relative to top water level, discharge capacity and downstream scour protection, so the structure passes its event rather than being overtopped by it
  • Diversion channel and site drainage design around the approved footprint: channel capacity, flood routing, sediment basin sizing, and erosion protection at the tie-in points
  • A site water balance built as a design input rather than a reporting output — the number that sets the storage, the discharge and the contingency, and the one that moves every time the mine plan does
  • The water half of a works approval package, and only that half. Fill and compaction specification, liner selection and batter stability geometry are a separate discipline and stay with the engineers who hold it

A works approval spans two disciplines. One decides what the structure is made of and how its batters stand up; the other decides how large it has to be and what it has to pass. The trouble shows up on the boundary between them — the volume set by one party at referral, the geometry drawn by another a year later, and nobody holding the cleared area while both were still moving.
