The Oyster Harbour and King George Sound catchments
Albany drains to three receiving waters, and which one a site sits above changes the assessment. Oyster Harbour takes the two largest systems to the north-east; Princess Royal Harbour takes the city and port catchment to the south-west; Torbay Inlet sits further west along the coast.
Oyster Harbour carries the volume. The Kalgan River runs about 140 kilometres through a catchment of roughly 2,560 square kilometres and is the region’s fourth largest river by average annual flow at around 53,400 megalitres. The King River is much shorter — about 27 kilometres, fed principally by Mill Brook. Both discharge to Oyster Harbour and from there to King George Sound.
Both catchments are heavily cleared: around 66 per cent of the Kalgan and about 83 per cent of the King River catchment, with the King discharging at roughly 800 mg/L salinity. On the Kalgan there is a detail worth knowing before any model is built — a rockbar at the Upper Kalgan bridge separates the freshwater upper reach from the tidal lower one. It sets the downstream boundary condition for the lower river, and getting that control wrong is one of the more common ways an Albany flood assessment produces confident numbers that do not survive review.
Groundwater is managed formally here and it constrains surface water work. The Albany Groundwater Area has been proclaimed since 1973 across roughly 280 square kilometres of the coastal strip, with the unproclaimed Albany Hinterland covering a further 1,200 square kilometres inland toward Redmond, Napier and Manypeaks. The South Coast Water Reserve — proclaimed in 1968 and realigned in 2001 — and the Marbelup Brook drinking water source protection area both limit what can be done on the land above them. A drainage strategy drawn up without checking those overlays tends to meet them later, during assessment, at the worst possible time.
