Overview
Fiord Group is a hydrology and flood engineering practice based in Denmark, Western Australia, with a Perth base. Why there is a page per place
The pages below are written per place rather than per keyword, because the hydrology genuinely differs from one to the next. Wilson Inlet at Denmark closes behind a sandbar for half the year and is usually opened artificially, so the downstream boundary condition on the lower Denmark River moves with the state of the bar. Sixty-six kilometres west at Walpole the inlets never close, and the tidal range inside them runs at about 40 per cent of the ocean range at Albany. At Mount Barker the shire sits on a drainage divide between three separate river systems. On the Swan Coastal Plain the controlling variable is usually the maximum groundwater level rather than pipe capacity. A method that treats those as the same problem produces four confident answers and at least three wrong ones.
One fact applies across all of them. DWER floodplain mapping covers twenty-six study areas in the whole of Western Australia, and DWER states plainly that information on flooding or flood levels outside those areas is not currently available. Four of the twenty-six are in the Great Southern. Where State Planning Policy 2.9 Water requires a habitable floor level 0.5 metres above the 1% AEP flood, most sites in this region have no 1% AEP flood level to measure from until someone derives it.
