Detention Basin Assessment

South West, WA · Flood Impact Assessment

Overview

Construction hardstands built inside a detention basin during a health campus redevelopment took storage out of it. The assessment quantified what that cost the basin, and whether the shortfall could be left in place permanently.

Location

South West, WA

Sector

Infrastructure & Government

Scope

Flood Impact Assessment · Hydraulic Structure Design

Rather than rebuild the hydrology, the earlier validated 2D model was reused with only its basin geometry updated from as-constructed survey — new breaklines, new stage–storage curves, everything else held constant so the before-and-after comparison measured the infill and nothing else.

Temporary works have a way of becoming permanent once the cranes leave. Answering that honestly means re-running the original model on the original assumptions, because a fresh model with fresh inputs cannot tell you how much of the change was the pads and how much was the method.
